Altair Invites Students to Participate in Electromagnetic Simulation Competition

Altair invites engineering students from across the globe to participate in the Altair Student Competition for Innovation in Electromagnetics (EM). Undergraduate and post-graduate students who have worked on a supervised project in EM engineering are invited to submit a solution to an EM problem in two categories: 

  • Using Altair Feko and or Altair WinProp: for antenna design and placement, radar cross-section, electromagnetic compatibility, radiofrequency devices, bio-electromagnetics, radomes, wireless propagation modeling and radio network planning
  • Altair FluxMotor and or Altair Flux: for e-Motor rapid design exploration and performance mapping and electromagnetic and thermal simulations

Now, in its 17th year, the competition encourages students to submit entries on innovative applications and use cases. Examples include high- and low-frequency electromagnetic simulation and multi-physics optimization, a key driver for innovation, addressing applications such as wave propagation modeling, radio network planning or electrical equipment design. Students submitting actual or new use cases that have an industry focus are of interest.

Students can win a laptop computer or attendance to an Altair Technology Conference. The Altair competition is a chance for students to showcase their work with Altair EM solutions. The winners of both competitions will also be invited to host a webinar to present their project.

“A huge success for the last 16 years, the annual Feko student competition has always provided an excellent opportunity to students interested in antennas, microwave devices, bio-electromagnetics, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to showcase their work and demonstrate the complexity and accuracy of the results achieved within each of the projects,” says Matthias Goelke, senior director, business development academic markets, Altair.

“At a time when energy efficiency is a global priority, students can use Altair software to design future generation e-motors and other electric equipment. Think of what a tremendous impact they can make on the planet. Altair software solutions are broadly used in the academic engineering communities and am already looking forward to the many innovative entries in both areas of electromagnetics,” he adds.

Some examples of use-case scenarios include: antenna design and placement with Feko; EMC, including cables and test setups according to standards, with Feko; wave propagation modeling and radio network planning with WinProp; virtual drive tests combining WinProp with Feko; multiphysics applications with Flux or FluxMotor; electrical equipment design and optimization with Flux and e-motor design applications with FluxMotor.

Interested student must register for one or both competitions to receive all the relevant information. The deadline for entries is November 30, 2019. All entries will be reviewed by a global team of application engineers.
