Conference Fosters Innovation with Simulation

COMSOL Conference 2015 gives attendees an immersive look at multiphysics simulation and application design during this specialized event.


Conf-LogoEvery day, engineers from different industries use multiphysics simulation in their design processes to accurately predict — in one virtual model — how their systems will hold up to elements such as mechanical and thermal stress, fluid loads and chemical agents. But the way design teams implement multiphysics software is adapting to solve engineering dilemmas, such as expanding access to simulation and analysis. To address those challenges, software vendors have to constantly enhance their products’ features to ensure their users are on the cutting edge.

COMSOL is no exception. The developer of  COMSOL Multiphysics was founded in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden, and now has offices in more than 20 countries, employing about 500 people. To keep its customers up-to-date with the latest multiphysics simulation capabilities and applications, the company hosts conferences in North America, Europe and Asia. This year’s COMSOL Conference 2015 North America will be held at the Boston Marriott Newton from October 7 to 9. The multi-day conference gives visitors access to software experts, industry, academia, research and knowledge on COMSOL Multiphysics directly from its creators and developers. The event is dedicated to enhancing users’ knowhow and simulation skills, according to the company.

A Hands-on Look at Multiphysics

At COMSOL Conference 2015 in Boston, attendees be able to choose from hundreds of different user presentations and 30 training courses on the COMSOL Multiphysics platform. Attendees can gain simulation and application design knowledge in areas such as electrical, mechanical, fluid and chemical processes.

Course topics, which span from introductory to advanced skill level, include:

  • Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Application Builder & COMSOL Server
  • Core capabilities for meshing, solvers, postprocessing and optimization
  • Electromagnetics
  • Structural Mechanics and Acoustics
  • CFD and Heat Transfer
  • MEMS Modeling
Training sessions are led by COMSOL specialists, letting new and experienced users of the software expand their knowledge of the platform through several application-focused sessions. As part of registration, all attendees will receive a trial of the latest version of COMSOL Multiphysics to use throughout the event.

Additionally, visitors can learn more about the current COMSOL Multiphysics release through several demo stations where application experts are available to answer questions and provide advice on attendees’ simulation work.

Specialized Industry Talks

Svante Littmarck, CEO of the COMSOL Group, will introduce COMSOL Version 5.2 at the conference. Littmarck will provide an exclusive look at upcoming features for the COMSOL Multiphysics software and their benefits to engineers. The 2015 conference will also feature presentations on simulation apps using the Application Builder and the COMSOL Server license.

This year’s conference features three customers as keynote speakers:

  • Richard Beyerle, GrafTech Innovation and Technology Center, will present “A World of Multiphysics Applications in Carbon and Graphite.” Beyerle will explain how simulation helps optimize insulation, calculate a growth profile for crystal boules and select the thinnest graphite foil for smartphones and tablets.
  • Dritan Celo, Huawei Canada Research Centre, will present “Heat Transfer Model of Ultracompact Optical Switches on Silicon Photonics Technology.” Celo will discuss how heat transfer modeling can help virtually prototype, lower cost and shorten design cycles for ultracompact optical switches used in photonic integrated circuits.
  • Stuart Brown, Veryst Engineering, will present “Forensic Engineering: Multiphysics Simulation Unravels Elevator Brake Failure.” Brown will recap how COMSOL Multiphysics solved an elevator brake and solenoid failure issue.
The keynote presentations are complemented by discussion-based Focus Sessions conducted by COMSOL technical product managers and simulation experts to highlight best practices for efficient and effective modeling and simulation work.

Connect with Colleagues

Beyond expanding their own knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics, conference attendees will have the ability to see first-hand how multiphysics simulation can help the product design process.

More than 700 user-submitted presentations offer insight into applications in fields like CFD (computational fluid dynamics), heat transfer, electromagnetics (both low- and high frequency) MEMS, optimization, structural mechanics, and acoustics. The event will have poster sessions in addition to user presentations, giving conference goers the chance to chat with presenters directly about their research in-depth. An exhibition will also showcase the products offered by COMSOL Partners.

Opportunities for professional development and networking will also be available to registrants with the inclusion of a tour of Fenway Park, the home of the Red Sox, a cocktail session and a gala dinner.

The combination of industry talks, focus sessions and user presentations lets COMSOL Conference attendees immerse themselves in one of the largest gatherings dedicated to multiphysics simulation and analysis. The conference is designed to expand registrants’ knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics, provide hands-on support and foster innovation in product design.
