Since its inception, AM promised to unlock design freedom for engineers. When AM reached the mission-critical metal parts market, it was quickly accompanied by a concept called “Design for Additive Manufacturing” or DfAM. However, a more accurate term would be “Design Restricted by Additive Manufacturing.”

DfAM limits engineers to the capabilities of conventional AM, only allowing for certain geometries, or adding supports to parts that must later be removed. These restrictions make conventional AM a poor solution to many of the world’s most complex engineering challenges.
