Geomagic has released a 64-bit edition of its Geomagic Studio 9 digital reconstruction software, which automatically creates 3D models from scanned data.  The 64-bit version can handle datasets that contain more than 200 million points or polygons, according to the company.

  Geomagic Studio supports applications such as mass production of customized devices, build-to-order manufacturing, engineering analysis, visualization, and digital asset archiving for automatic recreation of legacy parts. It processes point-cloud data from 3D scanners, converts point clouds into polygons, and translates polygon models into NURBS surfaces.

In addition, Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition) takes advantage of the additional memory capacity of 64-bit workstations to process huge datasets generated by the latest generation of noncontact 3D scanners. Geomagic reports that larger, denser datasets are appearing more frequently in automotive, aerospace and other industries for design, analysis, assembly, and inspection. A scan of an automotive exterior, for example, is typically in the range of 30 to 100 million points.

“The latest edition of Geomagic Studio fulfills the industry’s need for processing capacity while continuing to deliver Geomagic’s patented automation, flexibility and simplicity,” says Peter Scott, Geomagic’s vice-president of engineering.

Geomagic’s benchmark testing has shown Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition) capable of loading and processing models containing more than 200 million polygons on a system with 8 GB of RAM. The latest version of Geomagic Studio has proven to reduce processing time by as much as 90 percent.

The latest version of Geomagic Studio also includes improved NURBS surface generation and new features such as transparency for polygon models and advanced lighting properties. Geomagic Studio is offered in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Italian from Geomagic and its distributors worldwide.
