FARO, the developer of 3D measurement and imaging solutions for factory metrology, product design and other applications, has extended its Vantage Laser Tracker product line with a new portable CMM (coordinate measuring machine) designed for short to medium-range applications. The FARO VantageE Laser Tracker, says the company, includes well-proven features and capabilities such as high-speed dynamic measurement and is ideally suited for users who do not require the extended measurement range provided by the premium Vantage solution.

The FARO VantageE Laser Tracker offers many of the same features and capabilities of premium Vantage Laser Tracker. For example, both deploy FARO’s patented, fifth-generation TruADM (Absolute Distance Meter) technology, which enables fully dynamic measurement capabilities. Both fully support FARO's line of 3D measurement and inspection software.

The primary difference between the models is in their measurement range. The VantageE achieves a measurement range of up to 82 ft. (25 m). It has a 164 ft. (50 m) spherical working volume. The premium Vantage Laser Tracker is designed for short- to long-range measurement applications of up to 262 ft. (80 m) and has a 525 ft. (160 m) spherical working volume. Accuracy is up to 0.0006 in. (0.015 mm) at a typical angle measurement performance at 6.55 ft. (2m).

Vantage series laser trackers, explains FARO, are able to scan and take measurements continuously while a spherical optical probe is tracked across the surface of the part, object or assembly. If the laser beam is interrupted as the probe is moving, users can simply reacquire the beam and continue measuring.

The VantageE fully supports FARO’s patented Super 6DoF (6 Degrees of Freedom) TrackArm solution, which enables a Vantage Tracker and one or more FARO ScanArms to work together to create an integrated 3D measurement system. Super 6DoF, FARO asserts, completely eliminates line-of sight challenges and significantly expands measurement range while maintaining superior accuracy.

“A number of our factory metrology customers have expressed the need for a more affordable, but feature-rich tracker that would meet their applications for short-to-mid distance measurement,” stated Joe Arezone, chief commercial officer of FARO, in a press announcement. “In developing the VantageE, we quickly realized that customers would still need the accuracy of our longer-distance tracker along with the robust features that make the FARO Vantage Tracker solution ideally suited for solving real-world, everyday measurement challenges.

Miscellaneous features of the VantageE include two integrated cameras and integrated wireless networking. It's water and dust resistant (IP52 Rating). A carrying case and a variety of FARO’s spherically mounted retroreflectors (SMRs) laser tracker targets are available.

FARO VantageE Laser Tracker is priced at approximately 30% less than the premium Vantage, according to the company. To learn more about the new VantageE as well as the premium Vantage Laser Tracker, click here.
