Last week, at the CAASE (Conference on Advancing Analysis and Simulation in Engineering, June 5-7, Cleveland, OH), Mike McLeod, senior project manager from Accuride, participated in a talk on Democratizing Simulation, the initiatives to make simulation more accessible to a wider user base.

In his abstract, McLeod describes his presentation as, "Enabling Non‐expert Users Across the Enterprise to Discover Better Designs, Faster by Automating Design Exploration." His wisdom came from real-world experience, from his recollections of what worked and what didn't when Accuride tried to present simulation as a template-drive approach.

In DE's upcoming online roundtable, "Simulation Evolves for CAD Veterans," Mike joins two other panelists to discuss the same topic.

Advancing the use of simulation in the early concept design phase often runs into roadblocks because the key players are more familiar with geometry modeling, less so with simulation software. Can FEA (finite element analysis), CFD (computational fluid dynamics), and other simulation programs be introduced in a way that's more appealing to CAD users?

In this LIVE Roundtable, Panelists discuss:

• CAD-embedded simulation features

• App-style simulation tools

• Pros and cons of easy-to-use simulation software

Jody Smith, Mechanical Designer, Radiant Power Corp

Jody is a mechanical designer at Radiant Power Corporation. He has been a designer since 2003, working in various industries from commercial HVAC equipment to aerospace. Jody relies on multiphysics simulation tools and industry standard computer-aided design (CAD) programs for his project.

Patrick Hanley, Aerodynamicist/Owner, Hanley Innovations

Dr. Patrick E. Hanley is an aerodynamicist and the owner and founder of Hanley Innovations. He earned his B.S. degree (summa cum laude) in aerospace engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York and his S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At Hanley Innovations, Dr. Hanley develops state of the art 3D aerodynamics software that is used for the design and analysis of airplanes, UAVs, ground vehicles, sailboats and hydrofoils. Dr. Hanley recently joined the staff at Terrafugia, Inc. as a Technical Fellow.

Mike McLeod, Senior product engineer, Accuride Corp

Mike is a senior product engineer in the wheel engineering group at Accuride Corporation. He has been involved with product and process simulation at Accuride for 21 years, with an additional 12 years’ experience in aerospace and commercial industries. He earned his B.S degree in aerospace engineering from Auburn University and a M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville Alabama.
