AddiFab, inventor of Freeform Injection Molding, has been awarded an EU grant of mEUR 1.6 to advance commercial readiness for Freeform Injection Molding for ceramic and metal injection molding. The grant is provided under the SME Instrument.

Freeform Injection Molding combines short lead times, low start-up costs and full design freedom from additive manufacturing with the materials and scalability of injection molding. It is based on AddiFab’s Sacrificial Thermoplastic Injection Molding (STIM) technology, which allows complex injection-molded components to be made in as little as 24 hours.

In 3DIMS, a project funded by the Danish Innovationsfonden, STIM was used for the first time ever for metal and ceramic injection molding. Same-week delivery of ceramic injection-molded samples was achieved, and a number of metal alloys were processed. The project, which involved the Technical University of Denmark and two Danish companies, also led to the identification of improvement opportunities on usability and scalability that would make STIM more commercially attractive.

In the STIM-MC (Sacrificial Thermoplastic Injection Moulding-Metal & Ceramic) project, AddiFab aims to implement the improvements identified in the 3DIMS project. Furthermore, the company aims to demonstrate the commercial readiness of STIM for metal and ceramic injection molding through test cases together with a number of strategic partners.
