The Ethernet Alliance, a consortium focused on the advancement of Ethernet technologies, has released the details from the IEEE 802.1/IEEE 802.3 Joint Interim Meeting. This year's session, according to the organization, saw progress in the development of solutions to address the growing applications from Ethernet diversification.

The Interim Meeting had attendees participate in 18 different task forces and study groups. Among progresses from these groups include advancement for a single IEEE 802.3 standard to address 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T. Technology choices were also made by IEEE P802.3bz 2.5G/5G BASE-T task force and the IEEE P802.3bs 400GbE task force.

The alliance also gathered experts to discuss the future of 50 Gigabit Ethernet and Ethernet Passive Optical Networks.

“The latest IEEE 802 Interim illustrates that the development of Ethernet is truly a collaborative effort. For each of the noted efforts, a diverse cross-industry, cross-discipline group of individuals was able to achieve consensus and move each project forward,” said John D’Ambrosia, chairman, Ethernet Alliance, and chief Ethernet evangelist, Dell. “As the industry voice of Ethernet, the Ethernet Alliance serves the industry as the catalyst for collaboration and cooperation within the Ethernet ecosystem. Its effectiveness in moving the industry forward is reflected by the positive response to the Ethernet Alliance and its members’ recent consensus-building efforts around 2.5G/5G BASE-T Ethernet, as the industry is now coalescing behind the development of a single, open, IEEE 802.3-based standard.”
