Prototyping -- making a mockup of a product -- is an essential part of product development. Some manufacturing firms and design shops like to build the prototype in-house; others like to outsource them to service bureaus, which creates and delivers the mockup for a fee. If you outsource your prototypes, a service bureau might use a rapid-prototyping machine or a 3D printer to quickly churn out your orders. So if you tend to change your design numerous times in the prototyping phase, or if you like to evaluate several design variations for strength, durability, and aesthetics, the cost of ordering prototypes could quickly add up. Sooner or later, you confront the question: Can I afford to keep ordering prototypes, or is it more economical to invest in a rapid prototyping system?
