LIVE roundtable talk on autonomous car, Sep 21.

Quite possibly one of the most complicated and challenging engineering tasks, the development of the autonomous vehicle is expected to change the way humans and machines interact with each other. Since the car will effectively be a connected system, it’s also liable to the same security risks as a network or a mobile tablet.

A variety of technologies -- system-design tools, simulation software, machine learning, computer vision, sensors, to name but a few -- converge in the development of the self-driving car. In fact, the self-driving car's predecessor, the connected car, has been on the road for quite some time. Are there lessons to learn from its performance?

Joe Barkai’s focus is on researching, forecasting, and the strategic application of technology innovation in the automotive space. As the Chairman of the Automotive IoT program at SAE, the world’s largest organization of automotive engineers, Joe has a unique perspective on emerging technologies and business models in connected cars, autonomous driving, and mobility of the future. He works with auto manufacturers and suppliers, technology vendors, and system integrators to guide investments in vehicle telematics, infotainment and self-driving technologies, and formulate the commensurate business development strategies.

Previously, as VP of Research at IDC, a leading global market research firm, Joe led global research for over 8 years across a broad spectrum of industries, including automotive, industrial equipment, aerospace, construction, medical devices and high-tech.

Simon Hartley . VP Business Development, RunSafe Security

An expert in cybersecurity, mobility, and IoT, Simon Hartley is the cofounder of cybersecurity startup RunSafe Security. RunSafe was developed as part of DARPA’s cybersecurity program for military vehicles, drones, and medical devices. He is a member of SAE’s IoT Cybersecurity Committee and a contributing author to their new book Cybersecurity for Commercial Vehicles.  Simon also worked with Apple and Samsung in hardening their mobile devices for DoD and government use.
