Materialise invites designers and engineers to join them for the Medical Implant Scanning and Manufacturing Workshop and the Rapid Implant Manufacturing Forum (RIMF) at the 2009 RAPID conference in Schaumburg, IL.

RAPID is North America's largest annual rapid and additive manufacturing conference and exposition hosted by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Materialise chose to host these events during RAPID because, according to the company, the conference is an ideal fit for educational programs of this sort.

The Medical Implant Scanning and Manufacturing Workshop will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This workshop takes people through the process of producing custom implants using rapid prototyping technology from a medical scan, to data preparation and FEA, to printing parts and regulatory issues. The workshop will also explain how Materialise worked with an implant manufacturer to redesign a femoral implant based on iterative FEA results.

The workshop will be conducted by industry experts including: Koen Engelborghs, Materialise; Andy Christensen, Medical Modeling; Ola Harrysson, NC State University; and Dr. Stephen Rouse, Walter Reed Medical Center.

The third edition of the Rapid Implant Manufacturing Forum (RIMF) will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch to visit the show floor. The RIMF is a one-day conference track that addresses the latest trends and developments in rapid manufacturing and the design of custom implants.
