Report: Connected Cars to Represent 20% of Global Market by 2019

Juniper Research, in a recent report, has forecasted that the telematics sector will continue to outperform all M2M (machine to machine) markets over the next five years. This means that approximately one in five passenger vehicles will be connected globally by 2019, the firm states.

The key disruptor for this market, according to "M2M & Embedded Devices: Strategic Analysis & Vertical Market Forecasts 2015-2019," is smartphones. They will continue to drive innovation in industries such as health care, consumer electronics and retail. With this disruption, the M2M sector will generate service revenues of over $40 billion globally by 2019.

The report also states that smart metering initiatives will grow, driven by governments' ambitions to increase efficiency. “Both India and China are expected to see rapid adoption of smart metering as new metering infrastructure is installed and smart cities are created,” said Anthony Cox, research author.

Other findings include facts such as:

  • The U.S. remains the leading geographical region for M2M, with China becoming increasingly important.
  • Implementation of Big Data analytics will play an important role in areas such as telematics, smart metering and health care.
