Stratasys plans to offer Materialise’s Magics rapid prototyping software with its FDM (fused deposition modeling) systems. Magics RP comprises a number of software products that streamline and automate various tasks in the rapid prototyping process. These tasks include:

• cutting parts to fit on the build platform
• hollowing models to save material and build time
• Z compensation
• labeling
• 3D geometry nesting to minimize build height and time

Magics RP also provides support for import of a variety of CAD files and export of various rapid prototyping, tooling, and manufacturing formats. Users can also repair and optimize 3D models, analyze parts, and make process-related design changes to STL files.

“Magics’ integrated tools will play a key role in Stratasys’ goal of providing a total solution for users of their FDM systems,” said Wilfried Vancraen, CEO of Materialise. “Users can expect to see exceptional part quality, high throughput and increased ability to build large parts.”

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to delivering cutting-edge prototyping and manufacturing solutions to our customers,” said Scott Crump, Stratasys CEO.

He added that the companies are in the exploration stage of negotiating distribution agreements for additional Materialise products, in particular 3-matic, a forward-engineering application, and Mimics, which translates CT or MRI data into complete 3D models.

In February 2007, the two companies announced a partnership through which Materialise will develop a specialized version of Magics for 3D printers produced by Dimension, a Stratasys business unit.
