The Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) has stated the winners of its scholarships to attend and participate in this year's conference. The event will be held in Jacksonville, FL, in April. The user group awarded two scholarships, one to a professor who focuses on additive manufacturing (AM) and another to a student pursuing the technology.

Lydia Nelson, a teacher at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School in MA, received the Randy Stevens scholarship. According to the AMUG, the review committee selected Nelson for her determination, creative problem solving and approach to learning. With her technology curriculum, she implemented learning tools for CAD and had students build models with LEGO and household materials. Her classes also visited local companies to see 3D printing in action.

The student scholarship recipient is Yaser Shanjani. A postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Shanjani was attracted to AM because of its various technical aspects and unlimited applications. He has used the technology to build anatomically shaped bone-cartilage constructs for treatments of osteoarthritis, and is working on developing a system for tissue engineering.

“The submissions for this year’s scholarships were truly impressive. We were amazed at the accomplishments and excited by the work being done by and done for students. Having Lydia and Yaser join us at this year’s conference will accelerate their professional development in additive manufacturing,” said Mark Barfoot, president of AMUG.
