NextComputing has announced a new portable server solution for forward deployed military environments or any remote location that requires computing resources. The Vigor EX-B is NextComputing’s first completely battery-powered server, able to run on its own internal power for up to four hours. Designed to support tactical operations centers, the Vigor EX-B can be used to deliver virtualized “local cloud” computing services to multiple users in a remote setting.

NextComputing hopes to solve the usual problems encountered with deploying this kind of technology in the field with the Vigor EX-B. The server comes with an anodized aluminum chassis with both interior and exterior rubber shock absorbers. The Vigor EX-B is based on Intel Virtualization Technology, including support for VMWare and other hypervisor platforms. Lastly, to ensure security of sensitive data, the system supports Intel’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology, a growing requirement for many defense and intelligence programs.

The Vigor EX-B includes a 7.92 in. deep x 17.53 in. high x 19.75-in. wide chassis weighing less than 35 lbs, a 320W power supply with removable Lithium-ion battery pack, an Intel Xeon E3-1200 series Quad-Core processor and up to 32GB DDR3 memory.

Other features include four full-length, full-height PCI Express and PCI expansion slots for supporting off-the-shelf Gigabit, 10G, or Infiniband networking cards, integrated Intel HD Graphics or discrete professional graphics solutions from NVIDIA and AMD, and up to 6TB of fixed or removable storage with multiple RAID options.
