Cadillac Tests Super Cruise

You may have heard the urban legend about an old lady driving an RV. She hits cruise and heads to the fridge to make a sandwich. This, of course, doesn’t work out so well. When her RV crashes into other traffic, she explains her expectations that the vehicle would drive itself.

While that story might be fictional, the possibility of self-driving cars is coming closer to reality. Google has been testing a fully autonomous vehicle for some time, and a few other companies have been working on the same idea. Now it looks like Cadillac is poised to beat the rush of self-driving cars with its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

Super Cruise uses a mix of GPS, radar, cameras and ultrasonics to keep its car on the road. According to Cadillac, every feature can be integrated seamlessly into its vehicles, meaning Super Cruise can hit the road as soon as testing is completed. Unlike other self-driving cars in development, Super Cruise isn’t intended to replace drivers, but to assist them.

“Super Cruise is designed to give the driver the ability of hands-free driving when the system determines it is safe to do so,” said John Capp, GM director of Global Active Safety Electronics and Innovation. “Before we introduce this capability on a production vehicle, we must put the system through rigorous testing and technology refinement.”
