Cymbet Corporation announced the global availability of its EnerChip EP CBC-EVAL-09 Universal Energy Harvesting evaluation kit at the Embedded World 2011 show this week. The EVAL-09 kit supports all types of ambient energy harvesting from light and vibration, to thermal gradients and flow/motion.

The kit features the EnerChip Energy Processor (EP) CBC915-ACA, a universal energy harvesting power management unit for ultra-low power energy systems. According to the company, the EnerChip EP is the first device to work universally across all energy harvesting transducer technologies, including photovoltaic, thermoelectric, piezoelectric and electromagnetic.

The EVAL-09 Kit is available now through Cymbet’s distributors: Avnet, DigiKey and Mouser.

To store harvested energy, the EVAL-09 uses EnerChip solid state batteries (SSB). EnerChip SSBs have many eco-friendly attributes, including the ability to be recharged thousands of times to last the lifetime of the product. Moreover, Cymbet says EnerChip SSBs contain no flammable solvents or dangerous chemicals/gasses that can leak. Additionally, EnerChips use surface mount technology with reflow solder, eliminating the need for battery holders.

“The EVAL-09 was created in response to our customers’ desire to build zero power-based devices,” says Jeff Sather Cymbet vice president of Customer Solutions. “We are working closely with electronics designers to create new products that self-power by harvesting ambient energy. These devices, such as autonomous wireless sensors, data loggers, smart patches, micro actuators and process controls, are all ‘off the grid’ using life-of-product EnerChip energy storage.”
