Most of the action in green computing involvestightening up data centers, and buying, and then trying to fully utilize energyefficient servers. And some folks are even trying to cut down on how muchuseless data they store to reduce the number of voltage sucking disks, arrays,and SANs. (See related article.)

Dell,Inc. of Austin, TX, is hoping for some fresh green thinkingthrough its International Green Computing Technology Design Competition thatoffers a $30,000 prize for the person who can design the greenest computerever.

My bet? The professor from Gilligan’s Island will find a way to use afew coconuts and a bamboo exerciser to power a mainframe, but the idea willnever make it off the island (Russell Johnson is turning 83 thisSaturday).

Green ideas are due by next April.
