EOS reported that its EOSINT M 270 laser sintering system is used for the manufacture of dental implants, employing direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). Using a focused solid-state laser, the system helps to meet the demand for dental implants such as crowns and bridges,  one area of the economy that seems to be thriving in spite of the economic downturn.

Automated processing centers use EOS CobaltChrome, a biocompatible and CE-certified material developed by EOS especially for the dental industry for use in the EOSINT M 270, to produce individual dental implants. E-manufacturing employing laser sintering also is used. It is expected that the European market for dental crowns and bridges will rise steadily in the next few years, according to a survey conducted by the Millennium Research Group. New material options coupled with new treatment methods promise to increase the number of dental restorations people will seek out in the coming years.

A laser-sintering machine can produce up to 450 parts for dental crowns and bridges within 24 hours, with consistent high quality found in all the finished parts. This is a great improvement over traditional methods which have made these parts out of metal using a casting process.
