Software selected to help innovate wind turbine design.

Frontier Wind, LLC has selected several MSC.Software products, including the SimEnterprise solutions, SimManager and SimXpert, and MD Adams. Through the use of these simulation solutions, Frontier aims to develop more robust products,  lower warranty costs and, through lean engineering and best practice re-use,  increase profit margins.

The U.S. Department of Energy plans to increase the contribution from wind energy to supply 20% of the U.S. electricity needs by 2030. That’s a significant increase from its current level of 1.6%. This provides both a huge opportunity as well as a challenge as wind turbine manufacturers face the task of innovation under increasing market pressure.

Frontier Wind has turned to MSC.Software to provide advanced analysis of turbine blades, including composite designs subject to a diverse set of loads and environmental conditions, and to create re-usable templates to accelerate the simulation process using Frontier Wind’s best practice methods. This will enable Frontier Wind to reduce physical prototyping and testing requirements and thus, cut development time and costs.

“We strongly believe in simulation’s ability to allow us to reduce the substantial costs of physical testing,” says John McCoury, vice president of engineering, Frontier Wind.
