Regardless of what business you might be in, time management is always a primary concern. The quicker a product makes its way through the design process, the quicker it makes its way into your customers’ hands. 3D scanners offer time saving for additive manufacturing (AM) and design by translating physical objects into digital files.

3D Systems’ new Geomagic Capture further reduces time to market by offering an integrated scanning and inspection solution. Capture gives users the power to scan objects directly into CAD files, while simultaneously providing a desktop metrology tool. The entire package consists of a blue light LED 3D scanner, Geomagic application software (varies based on Capture package purchased), desktop scanner stand, AC adapter and data cable.

The desktop 3D scanner that comes as part of Capture is professional quality, according to the company, offering a scan speed of 0.3 seconds/scan, a depth of field of 180 mm, and a pre-calibrated accuracy of 60 microns at the near field (about 0.3m from the scanner) to 118 microns at the far end of the field (about 0.5m from the scanner). As a further attempt at ease-of-use, the company says the scanner does not require targets to align multiple scans.

The Capture software represents a merging of technology from both Geomagic and Rapidform and is, according to 3D Systems, useful for a wide range of applications including heavy-duty manufacturing, industrial design, automotive, and jewelry. In addition to direct to CAD scans, Capture also features inspection software to ensure parts have been manufactured correctly, or to check third-party parts.

Capture can be directly integrated with other systems, such as:

  •  SolidWorks
  • SpaceClaim
  • Design X
  • Design Direct
  • Control
  • Verify
Capture is available for demo, and can be purchased for between $14,900 to $24,900, depending on package. Both the 3D scanner and the Capture software can be used independently of each other, and are compatible with scanning systems or information capture provided by other companies.
