Hammer/Screwdriver Combo Takes Student Honors

If you're like me, half the furniture in your house came out of a box. If only I'd had this combination hammer/electric screwdriver designed by a Norwegian student, putting all those couches and shelves together may not have take so long.

The tool was designed by Christer Oldeide, a mechanical engineering student at the Norwegian University of Science & Technology. Students were tasked with creating an inexpensive electric screwdriver for assembling flat-pack furniture. His design was featured as a winner of the monthly Siemens PLM Software Student Design Contest earlier this year. (Oldeide used NX to design the device.)

Siemens PLM Software awards prizes each month for the best student design using its products. The designs are also entered in the Siemens PLM Software global calendar contest, which features one student's image.

To see more of the Siemens student design winners, check out the list here. The contest has been running since June 2008. So far, the 2013 winners have included everything from a cycling park to an Epiphone Wilshire 1966 guitar re-issue, and even a Brahmos missile launcher.
