Support for up to eight 146GB/10K RPM SAS drives is the latest feature addition to the NextDimension Evo line of portable flextop computers from NextComputing (Nashua, NH). The new line uses Seagate Technology‘s (Scotts Valley, CA) Savvio 10K.2 SAS drives. The company says that SAS drives can provide up to two times the data transfer rates of SATA drives.

In order to provide sustained read and write rates comparable to those of larger stationary systems, the NextDimension Evo and Evo HD rely on three elements: the maximum number of high-speed drives, the performance of the processor cores, and four PCI or PCIe slots. The Evo Series accommodates six of the 146GB/10KRPM SAS drives in the user-accessible bay and two drives in the fixed bay. The NextPak option can be added to support up to four or five additional 146GB/10K RPM SAS drives, dependent upon RAID controller configuration.

NextComputing also recently announced support for up to 16 160GB/7200 RPM SATA drives. For more information, visit nextcomputing.com.
