Datron Dynamics Inc.(Milford, NH) has introduced its German-made miniRaptor to NorthAmerica. The CNC machine is designed specifically for speed andversatility--particularly when machining aluminum--in applications suchas micro drilling, milling, tapping, and engraving. Based on technologydeveloped for its "Raptor Class" machine centers, Datron has produced acompact version, suited to the typical electronic manufacturingenvironment. The reduced size (51 in. x 51 in. footprint) also allowsDatron to price the machine at $46,800.

Reduced size notwithstanding, the miniRaptor still features a 20 in X20 in. X 8 in. working envelope, which, says Datron, provides ampleroom for the prototype short runs typical of electronic RandDcompanies. Plus, the smaller bed size has facilitated the use of asolid slab of granite for the machining table, which providesmanufacturers with increased rigidity to minimize vibration.

The package price offers standard features including a 60,000 RPMspindle with a 0.125 in. collet, 3-Tool Automatic Tool ManagementSystem, Microsoft Windows-based control software, a full-featured PC,handheld controller, Ethernet networking capability, remote monitoringcapability, a removable chip-disposal tray, and a full machining-areaenclosure with an industrial-grade door/safety interlock system.

Options include a 60,000 RPM spindle with 0.250 in. collet, 10-ToolAutomatic Tool Management System, flat screen LED monitor, Z-CorrectionProbe that recognizes irregular work piece topology, and a 3D probeextension that locates and compensates for material irregularities inX, Y, and Z coordinates and facilitates reverse engineering.

An integrated Ethanol-Mist Coolant SystemT provides for superb surfacefinishes and eliminates secondary processes like de-burring orde-greasing to further improve cycle times, says Datron. For moreinformation on the miniRaptor, log onto datrondynamics.com.
