Sun Microsystems (Las Vegas, NV) unveiled new UltraSPARC T2-based servers that deliver advanced virtualization capabilities, increased system utilization, and industry-leading energy efficiency.
The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 servers and Sun Blade T6320 modules deliver the compute power of 64 individual systems on a single server or blade and beat competing RISC servers on web-tier tasks by more than four times while maintaining 6x better performance per watt. Using Solaris OS and with free virtualization technologies built-in, these new Sun servers are said to be both flexible and cost-effective.
Sun’s x64 and CMT servers use unified system architecture designs and chassis with reliability designed-in for maximum uptime. The consistently located, swappable components offer easy access and shorten service times. The new systems join the recently announced Sun Fire X4450 and X4150 servers (http://www.digitaleng.news/articles/aaafkb.htm), which are powered by quad-core Intel Xeon processors.
The SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers deliver better ERP and B2B application performance in a quarter of the space at nearly a quarter of the cost of a dual socket IBM p570 with the Power 6 processor.
Built-in open source, no-cost virtualization capabilities using Solaris Containers and Logical Domains (LDoms) enable IT staff to maximize system utilization, helping to lower the costs of delivering new IT services. The SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 systems are the first servers to be instantly discoverable on the network via Sun Connection.
The Sun Blade T6320 server module delivers enhanced virtualization and consolidation capabilities for the data center with features and functionality comparable to the SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 systems in a blade form factor. Supported in the Sun Blade 6000 modular system, the Sun Blade T6320 server module is the fastest performing single-socket blade, states the press release, and consumes nearly 30 percent less power. Optimized for large multi-node installations. the new module is 10 times faster to deploy and service and can mix and match with other CPU architectures and operating systems within the same chassis to address multi-tier application requirements.
Specific details are available on the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 servers and on the Sun Blade T6320 server module. Sun Microsystems is also creating solutions leveraging the SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 and Sun Blade T6320 server modules for message security and Web server encryption.
