Rackable Systems, Inc. (Fremont, CA), a provider of servers and storage products forlarge-scale data centers, announced a portfolio of servers based on its newMicroSlice architecture, which is said to eliminate the need for costlyvirtualization software and sets a new standard for priceperformance-per-watt.

The MicroSlice architecture enables the smallestserver footprint ever introduced by Rackable Systems, supporting up to 264servers per cabinet while drawing as few as 72 watts per server. MicroSliceeliminates the need for virtualization software through “physicalization,” arevolutionary, hardware-based approach to virtualization, which further improvesthe total cost of ownership.

MicroSlice establishes new server price points, with many configurations starting at sub-$500, while delivering the performanceand server-class features required by cloud computing and Web-basedenvironments. This 80 percent per-server cost reduction yields a 51percentimprovement in price/performance — a relief for many IT departments strugglingto scale their infrastructures despite reduced CapEx and OpExbudgets.

Four new MicroSlice-based servers are available inCloudRack tray and half-depth server configurations. Leveraging the latest,high-density AMD board designs, these new servers support AMD’s Dual-Core Athlonand Tri or Quad-Core Phenom processors. All of these products are supported byRackable’s Roamer advanced server management module and benefit from ultra-highefficiency power supplies.
