Silicon Graphics, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) unveiled SGI InfiniteStorage 15000, a new storage platform that pushes beyond existing limitations in access speeds, capacity, footprint, and energy efficiency, the company says, for data-rich and streaming media environments.

With the SGI InfiniteStorage 15000, IT managers, already under pressure to control costs, can achieve cost-effective consolidation and powerful data sharing; give users and applications universal access to a single, scalable pool of storage; and accommodate the capacity and speed demands of high-performance computing (HPC), energy, digital content, streaming media, satellite communications/surveillance, and other fields where large data assets are common.

SGI InfiniteStorage 15000 storage systems (starts at $560,000) deliver performance and scalability, while enabling organizations to make use of disks to minimize power and cooling costs.

A balanced read/write performance of 6 gigabytes/second optimizes data storage and access. A single controller can handle multiple 4K streams of data, with capacity that can scale to 1.2 Petabyes in only two racks.

A built-in Dynamic Massive Array of Idle Disks (D-MAID)  functionality is offered and high-performance SAS and cost-effective SATA drives can be combined in dense packaging and assigned based on the performance requirements of the applications.
