UGS Corp. (Plano, TX; ) says Solid Edge Version 19 provides a full suite of tools for adding Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) to 3D designs. Advanced 3D annotation tools mean PMI is captured and stored within Solid Edge 3D models and assemblies. These "smart" models reduce the need for drawings in design reviews and can be used for many downstream purposes to support lean initiatives and manufacturing.

According to a press release from UGS, the CAD component of its new Velocity Series portfolio includes the PMI tools to improve communication between departments and save time.

"Including 3D product definition in a single digital file improves productivity, ensures the 3D information is accurate and in sync, and removes the need to keep multiple documents up to date," said Adrian Scholes, director of Solid Edge marketing for UGS. "As more companies need to collaborate and exchange data, PMI can reduce or eliminate the number of 2D drawings required. PMI is one more reason why using Solid Edge can shorten design cycles through streamlined design and manufacturing processes."

Solid Edge uses its intuitive SmartStep approach to guide users through the process of adding PMI to 3D models. Dimensions and annotations, such as weld symbols and surface finish, are easily added to the model. In addition, 3D Section Views can be created and dimensioned for even greater clarity, which is useful for assemblies where internal components are not easily seen. Free viewer and reviewer software allow shop floor assembly workers or maintenance engineers to view PMI.
