Creaform, Inc. (Lévis, Québec) has introduced the UNIscan,  an entry-level model and the newest member of its Handyscan 3D family of handheld 3D laser scanners. The UNIscan is intended to be a cost-efficient alternative for a wide range of users in industrial, multimedia, and medical settings requiring 3D laser scanning for such applications as reverse engineering,  design, damage assessment, digital model creation, multimedia content creation,  rapid prototyping, and ergonomic studies.

“Since the launch of the Handyscan 3D scanners lineup,  Creaform has been striving to democratize and promote the use of 3D scanning,”  says Charles Mony, president of Creaform, in a prepared press statement. “We are really happy to open 3D scanning to a wider community by simplifying it,  without giving up on the performance, quality, concepts and technology that made the Handyscan 3D scanners so successful.”

The 2.1-lb. (980 gram) UNIscan provides many of the same features as the other members of Handyscan 3D family, including self-positioning and portability. Technical specifications include Z-axis resolution of 0.004 in (0.1 mm); accuracy to 80 µm; and 18,000 measures per second. Output formats include dae, .fbx, .ma, .obj, .ply, .stl, .txt, .wrl,  .x3d, .x3dz, .zpr.

The UNIscan comes with VxScan Express, a simplified version of Creaform’s proprietary data acquisition software that works in conjunction with the reverse engineering software of your choice. The 64-bit compatible VxScan Express software provides such capabilities as automatic multi-resolution, real-time 3D rendering visualization, automatic surface reconstruction, and surface optimization algorithms.

The UNIscan costs $28,900 (US). It comes with a carrying case, calibration plate, ergonomic support, FireWire cable, ExpressCard connecting card, power supply, and 2,500 positioning targets. Available optional accessories include a field pack for outdoor scanning, a laptop computer, and target applicator. Software plug-ins, available as either options off standard components from Creaform or third parties, provide compatibility between the UNIscan laser scanner and such applications as CATIA, Geomagic,  PolyWorks, Rapidform, and SolidWorks Premium.
