Affordable NASTRAN Empowers Engineers NASTRAN L-Series offers cost-effective “true” NASTRAN and no waiting for corporate copy. The MacNeal Group LLC (Altadena, CA) describes its new NASTRAN L-Seriesas a true NASTRAN system for the CAE users who need easy, affordable, and individual access to NASTRAN capabilities without having to waitfor the corporate NASTRAN resources to be freed up. Three flavorscomprise the company’s NASTRAN L-Series product suite—Linear Staticanalysis, linear static and modal analyses, and linear static, modaland dynamic analyses—with each offered for a one-time charge. The NASTRAN L-Series, says the company, is not a NASTRAN emulator.Rather, it’s based on a “true” NASTRAN architecture with scalablematrix operations. Additionally, the L-Series can be used inconjunction with most of popular FE (finite element) pre- andpost-processors. Each L-Series product offers a full range of modeling tools, such asgrids, elements, constraint elements, material properties, loads, andconstraints. The company also says the product lines incorporate newand unique finite element technologies and solver. Additionally, allthe L-Series products are said to provide the ability to use standardDMAP sequences, modify them, or develop your very own.L-Series members leverage off the base product NASTRAN-LS, whichprovides linear static analyses, including inertia relief. NASTRAN-LMextends of NASTRAN-LS to include normal modes analysis and eigenvaluebuckling analyses. NASTRAN-LD includes all of these capabilities aswell as complex eigenvalue analysis and frequency response andtransient response analyses using either the direct or modalformulations.NASTRAN L-Series runs on Windows 2000 or Windows XP systems. Productlicenses start at $995 for NASTRAN-LS and top out at $2,995 forNASTRAN-LD. For complete details, go to the MacNeal Group website byclicking here.
Editor’s Pick of the Week—June 21, 2006ANSYS Workbench MatWeb Integration Speeds Design Cycle
Partnership brings in material property data for early simulations.ANSYS, Inc. (Canonsburg, PA) has partnered with MatWeb (Blacksburg, VA)to provide access to MatWeb’s wealth of material property data fromwithin ANSYS Workbench.ANSYS Workbench is the simulation platform that integrates the advancedphysics capabilities that ANSYS offers. It handles bidirectionalassociativity with such MCAD applications as CATIA, Inventor, Pro/E,SolidWorks, and Unigraphics. In addition to providing for automaticmeshing, ANSY Workbench offers access to model parameters and tofunctionality available in within the ANSYS Mechanical products, including DesignModeler, Fatigue Module, CFX, and ICEM. ANSYS Workbenchis designed to be intuitive to use, according to the company, and itcan compress time out of your CAE process by eliminating manual filetransfers, result translations, and re-analysis runs. The increased material property data available from the ANSYS-MatWebcollaboration enables ANSYS users to simulate more material behaviorsmore accurately earlier in their design process. Ultimately, thisshould translate in reduced expenditures on materials use for physicalprototypes. This new partnership lets ANSYS users import material properties fromMatWeb’s collection of more than 55,000 material data sheets. The depthof MatWeb’s database property information spans ceramics, metals, andthermoplastic and thermoset polymers as well as semiconductors, fibers, and other engineering materials. MatWeb data sheets are said to provideprecise descriptions of material properties, the majority of whichoriginate from testing by the manufacturers. The partnership enables you to create and export libraries of 20materials at a time in ANSYS library format (XML) from MatWeb’scollection. The appropriate property values in the correct units areadded to theANSYS library XML file automatically. To locate materials of interest, yousearch the MatWeb database using one of its three search methods:Quantitative, such as physical properties or alloy composition;Categorized, for example, material type, metal UNS number, ormanufacturer; or a keyword text search. Additionally, MatWeb providesonline material tools such as a unit converter, weight and inertiacalculator, and a hardness converter to help you along in your designs. For more information on MatWeb, a division of Automation Creations,Inc., click here. Solid Edge 19 Launches"Hundreds of user-requested enhancements” says spokesperson. Company also unveils NX CAM Express.New relationship types between gears and motors as well as new explodeand motion simulation capabilities are some of the enhancements inSolid Edge version 19 that UGS Corp.(Plano, TX) highlights. In asimultaneous announcement, the company also unveiled NX CAM Express, anew application that adds NC programming to the company’s VelocitySeries of PLM solutions for small and midsize manufacturers. NX CAMtightly integrates with Solid Edge 19, according to UGS. What it meansfor Solid Edge users is that they can now leverage a full range ofscalablemanufacturing solutions—product design, tool design, and NCprogramming—in parallel.Solid Edge v19 “includes hundreds of enhancements requested by oursmall and mid-size customers,” said Adrian Scholes, director of SolidEdge marketing for UGS in a briefing with DE. Further, Mr. Scholespointed out various features and capabilities that enable designers, manufacturers, and global partners to create, share, and manage designinformation.
› › AMF Bakery Systems in Sherbrooke, Quebec, used Solid Edge to design thisoffset tilt bowl mixer and rotary dough chunker. The company reports thatits move from 2D AutoCAD to Solid Edge has reduced design time by 50 percent, assembly time by up to 20 percent, virtually eliminated sheet metal rework, andhas allowed AMF to meet delivery times with less overtime and higherprofitability. AMF is a leading supplier of equipment, parts, and service tothe wholesale bakery industry. See more on AMF’s use of Solid Edge here.
Solid Edge v19 offers full-motion simulation capabilities. Here, engineers can now define relationships between different motiondrivers, such as gears, pulleys, hydraulic cylinders, and motors. Next, engineers can send their suppliers and customers motion studies oftheir product/design, showing how that product/design is intended tofunction. Additionally, v19 offers dynamic documentation tools that letengineers capture, modify, and animate how parts are assembled anddisassembled.Other collaboration enhancements in Solid Edge v19 include the JTstandard file format, which enable the sharing of 3D part and assemblydesign across multiple CAD platforms and PMI (Product ManufacturingInformation) functionality. The latter enables v19 to produce3D-annotated designs that are compliant with such standards as ASMEY14.41, mean that Solid Edge models can now serve as single digitalrepresentation containing all product data.   Solid Edge’s sheet-metal design capabilities offer such new features ascorner stiffeners, cross breaks, and hems. Other features in Solid Edge19 include bend tables, enhanced workflow for AutoCAD data, and WYSIWYGimport of DXF/DWG files that includes matching color schemes, fonts, styles, and backgrounds. Also, with the introduction of v19, Solid Edgeis available in a 64-bit edition to speed the creation of massiveassemblies and associated drawings. In its simultaneous announcement of NX CAM Express, UGS explains thatthe software will be available in “CAD-neutral packages” as well as anintegrated component within the company’s NX and Solid Edge designenvironments. The latter includes integration with the company’s CAEofferings, higher-level CAM facilities, and Teamcenter PLM systems. NXCAM Express will be available in five modules, with capabilitiesranging from 2.5-axis machining to mold and die to five-axis machinesOperationally, NX CAM Express, says UGS, can help users maximize theiruse of advanced machines through its built-in guidance on bestpractices and pre-configured programming environments thatautomatically set the system to the user’s machining area of interest.New users can take advantage of tutorials that are provided with thesoftware, walking users through typical tasks and reducing the need foroff-the-job training. Each NX CAM Express package, says UGS, comes with toolpathverification, a post-processor build and edit application, CADtranslators, programming automation tools, and a machining parametersdatabase. The software automatically selects key machining parametersfrom the database according to the machining operation, such asroughing or finishing, and the stock material, the tool dimensions, andthe targeted machine tool. Additionally, the database addresses themajority of materials machined in mold and die work.NX CAM Express will be available for delivery shortly.
