FTC Releases Report on IoT Security

By DE Editors

January 28, 2015

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released a report that recommends steps businesses can take to increase privacy and security in Internet-connected devices.

The Internet of Things (IoT), according to the FTC, is already impacting the daily lives of millions of Americans through wearables, home security devices, connected cars and household appliances. However, these tools raise questions regarding privacy and security concerns.

The report is based on research and input from technologists and academics, industry representatives, consumer advocates and attendees of the IoT Workshop held by the FTC in November.

In its suggestions, the FTC states that companies should:

  • Build security into devices at the outset;
  • Train employees about the importance of security;
  • Ensure outside service providers are capable of maintaining security;
  • Consider a "defense-in-depth" strategy for when security risks are identified;
  • Monitor connected devices throughout their expanded lifecycle.
“The only way for the Internet of Things to reach its full potential for innovation is with the trust of American consumers,” said Edith Ramirez, chairwoman, FTC. “We believe that by adopting the best practices we’ve laid out, businesses will be better able to provide consumers the protections they want and allow the benefits of the Internet of Things to be fully realized.”
