Company aims to influence the future of wearable AI technology.

Nike is debuting its A.I.R (Athlete Imagined Revolution) line, which represents a new realm of sneaker design. Recently shown in Paris, this collection includes 13 sneakers created using 3D printing and artificial intelligence.

The event, complemented with commentary from Serena Williams, blended technology with personal athletic expression.

John Hoke, Nike’s chief innovation officer, explained the company's new approach. “We’re shifting past basic functionality to craft shoes that encapsulate the athlete’s character,” Hoke says. “Each shoe is custom-fit to the athletes’ performance needs and personal tastes, reflecting their unique styles.”

A.I.R Sneaker Construction

The production of A.I.R sneakers begins with AI-generated “mood boards” for inspiration. The designs were tweaked using computational design tools and brought to life through 3D printing, which enables quick creation and customization.

Various athletes offered input into the design process, sharing insights on color preferences, functionality requirements and more. San Antonio Spurs NBA player Victor Wembanyama’s sneakers, for example, included elements inspired by his interest in science fiction. This collaborative approach allows for each shoe to offer performance and a connection to its wearer.

As of now, the A.I.R sneakers are exclusive and not available for general purchase, but point to a day when consumers may seek personalized footwear to complement their physical and aesthetic preferences.

“This collection reimagines sports footwear, aligning it perfectly with the specific needs and identities of athletes,” says Heidi O’Neill, president of Consumer, Product, and Brand at Nike. “This approach not only sets a new bar for athletic gear but also strengthens the connection between athletes and their gear.
