Nissan Implements an End-to-End Data Solution

Nissan Motor Co.’s Tochigi plant in Japan sets the standard for the company’s other plants. The systems at Tochigi are cutting-edge, generating huge volumes of information that go into every aspect of automobile design and production.

The plant’s file server was struggling to cope with increasing volumes of data, and backup processes were taking more time. System response times were also lengthening, and in the event of a disc error or failure, recovering lost data would be time-consuming, affecting production.

After a careful evaluation of three vendors, the department chose to work with Dell EMC and based their solution on Dell EMC DR4100 Backup Appliances running NetVault Backup software.

Today, Nissan is in a better position to enhance automobile production at the Manufacturing and Engineering Department No. 2 site, increasing storage capacity to 40TB—20X more than before—and enhancing data backups.

The former system took around 30 hours to back up 1TB of data, and the target was to reduce this to eight hours. Today, the new Dell system backs up the data in less than two hours. Furthermore, the Manufacturing and Engineering Department No. 2 site lowered maintenance costs because of the reduced number of physical servers.
