Pointwise CFD Software Version 17.2 Launched

August 19, 2014

Pointwise Inc. has launched the latest version of its flagship CFD (computational fluid dynamics) meshing software. One of the main features of version 17.2 is the enhancement of the users' ability to generate layers of hexahedral cells rapidly, the company states.

Pointwise generates structured, unstructured and hybrid meshes, interfaces with CFD solvers such as ANSYS FLUENT, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM and other neutral formats. It also supports native, neutral and standard CAD file formats such as ACIS, CATIA V4/V5, NASTRAN, NX, Parasolid, SolidWorks and STEP.

Other new features include new native interfaces to the Edge and LAURA CFD codes, updated CAD format interfaces and several other user functions.

“The enhancement involves how the software combines high aspect ratio — anisotropic — tetrahedra into hexahedra,” said John Steinbrenner, vice president of research and development, Pointwise. “The new tet-to-hex agglomeration yields about a one-third reduction in run time, an increase of nearly 20%  in high quality cells in the extruded layers, and almost a 3o% reduction in the number of isotropic cells in the farfield.”
