Solidscape, a manufacturer of high-precision 3D printers, and LSR's Design Studio, have revealed a new prototyping process that will increase time to market, a press release states.

By combining Solidscape's printing capabilities with LSR's silicone or metal mold making process, prototypes can be created in less than two weeks. This is significantly less than the standard five to six weeks needed to create new plastic or metal parts.

According to Solidscape, the process is both additive and subtractive. It is able to print at a resolution of 5000 dpi and the process does not require hand finishing. LSR experts were also able to go directly to silicon tooling or metal part casting after the part was printed. This process also significantly reduces costs, the company states, with a set of metal parts costing $200 instead of $4,000.

“We’re excited to collaborate with LSR on this new venture and to take rapid prototyping to the next level,” said Fabio Esposito, president, Solidscape. “With this new disruptive process, users can now go directly from machine to molding, expediting the time it takes to go to market."
