On the heels of last week’s announcement by Sun Microsystems (Santa Clara, CA; http://www.sun.com/) that its office productivity software, StarOffice, would be distributed for free through Google Pack software download service, this week Sun announced that it will change its Nasdaq stock ticker symbol from SUNW to JAVA, which it created in 1995. The stock ticker change will go into effect for the trading community on Monday, August 27, 2007. The Java technology includes application in a broad array of businesses including telecommunications companies. The platform powers and is made visible by more than 2.1 billion mobile devices (Ovum 2007); Java is in use by nearly every PC on the Internet and numerous consumer electronics and embedded systems products including Sony’s Playstation 3. A complete history of Java is online.
