This week, 10,000 of the virtualization faithful, along with more than 100 vendors, are descending upon San Francisco for VMworld. And anytime there are that many people and companies, there’s bound to be news.

We’ll cover more of the news in detail in our next edition. For now you’ll have to be content with just a taste.

Given that it is its show, VMware, Inc. of Palo Alto led off the announcements. Its latest server tool, ESX Server 3i, now ties directly to server hardware, rather than depending upon the OS. This means the new hypervisor can be far smaller, much faster, and easier to deploy, the company claims.

VMware also has a new recovery tool for virtual servers, and new software that links virtual desktops and eases their configuration.

Networld World has a pretty good overview of this week’s VMworld show.
