Glossary: APU

An accelerated processing unit (APU) combines a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU) on the same die. This improves data transfer rates and reduces power consumption.

APUs include 3D rendering, video processing and other application-specific accelerators.

It’s a single chip that combines:

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) — handles general tasks and logic

  • GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) — handles graphics and parallel tasks

So, instead of having a separate CPU and a dedicated graphics card, an APU gives you both in one chip.
