This type of computing, often referred to in association with the industrial internet of things (IIoT), is performed at or close to data’s origination point, removing the need for remote computers – often accessed via the cloud – to perform the work. For example, a large wind turbine would pull extensive data from an array of sensors or equipment associated with it. As of now, edge computing exists to process, store, weed out and push data to cloud systems.
