FARO Technologies has released SCENECT, a free app that leverages sensor data from a Microsoft Kinect or other similar devices for 3D scanning. The application incorporates the color data along with the geometry of the object to produce full-color 3D models.

SCENECT software is a special version of SCENE LT, which provides the capability to control a Microsoft Kinect or ASUS Xtion PRO Live to create 3D point clouds.

As the field of view of these gaming sensors is significantly smaller than of the FARO laser scanner, the main task of SCENECT is the registration of single 3D frames to compose larger scenes, the company says. The registration is done mainly using the color texture of the scanned scene and also the measured 3D data. Objects can be scanned from different sides by moving the sensor around the objects, and rooms can be scanned by panning and moving the sensor inside the rooms.

The 3D models can be saved in different formats and processed in other software programs, such as CAD.
