3D Systems Corporation (Rockhill, SC), a provider of 3D modeling, rapid prototyping and manufacturing solutions, has begun commercial shipments of its new V-Flash Desktop Modeler to North American customers.

The V-Flash Desktop Modeler builds 3D models within hours at home or in the office, enabling designers, engineers, hobbyists, and students to imagine, design, and build their ideas from the desktop. The modeler is the first product from 3D Systems based on the company’s new film transfer imaging (FTI) technology platform. Priced at $9,900, the modeler transforms .stl (file format) designs into solid plastic models that can be used for demonstration, testing, and verification the same day.

Through an intelligent, low-waste materials cartridge, which also houses the modeler’s wear parts, the V-Flash builds prototypes with a build volume of up to 486 cubic inches (1234.4cm). It has the capability to produce multiple models simultaneously without significant impact to the Z-height build speed. The finished model can be sanded, painted, drilled, metal-plated or glued. The modeler, measuring 66 x 69 x 79cm, weighs 66kg.

Bundled with Alibre Design Software and other accessories, the V-Flash Desktop Modeler is available through 3D Systems’ North American reseller network. It is expected to be released in Europe and Asia later in 2008.

3D Systems recently demonstrated its V-Flash HA 230 Production System for the rapid manufacturing of custom hearing aid shells and molds, in partnership with Dreve Otoplastik, an ear mold and materials manufacturer, at the AmericanAcademy of Audiology’s AudiologyNOW! 2008 Show in Charlotte,NC.
