Siemens Smart Infrastructure builds on its partnership with Italian DSO, AcegasApsAmga, reporting the start of a project, using Siemens’ Gridscale X technology to enable situational awareness of the power grid of the municipality of Trieste in Italy. This is designed to advance the city’s electrification strategy, primarily designed to mitigate pollution levels stemming from the Port of Trieste, one of Europe’s active ports.

By developing a digital twin of Trieste’s power grid, AcegasApsAmga aims to proactively manage congestion challenges arising from growing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), and the energy demands of port operations. Siemens’ Gridscale X software will support the DSO in ensuring an efficient power supply for docked ships. The port currently handles over 70 million tons of cargo annually.

Siemens and AcegasApsAmga Collaboration

The partnership between Siemens and AcegasApsAmga spans more than 100 years, with the Italian DSO leveraging Siemens’ SCADA system and ADMS functionalities to optimize grid operations. Now, with Gridscale X, the collaboration is moving forward to support the decarbonization of the municipality of Trieste. By simulating grid conditions, the software can identify congestion points and calculate the energy required to address them, ensuring a stable grid while accelerating the Trieste Municipality’s electrification and decarbonization programs.

"As the power grid increases in complexity, we need to embrace digitalization to optimize its performance and resilience,” says Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software. “Collaborating with the Italian DSO, AcegasApsAmga, presents an opportunity for the utility to leverage Siemens’ digital twin technology to simulate, monitor, and manage energy flows in real time.

“Working together with Siemens, we aim to gain critical visibility over the grid to proactively identify potential congestion points and calculate the energy needed to mitigate issues. Using Gridscale X, we can do this in an efficient and reliable manner, ensuring there are no disruptions to Trieste’s port operations,” says Carlo Andriolo, CEO of AcegasApsAmga.
