EOS GmbH (Krailling, Germany & Novi, MI), a manufacturer of laser sintering systems, presents two new commercial materials at SME’s Rapid 2008 Conference and Exposition on May 20–22.

The company’s new plastic, PrimePart DC, is an impact-resistant polyamide with a tensile strength of 48MPa. It has an elongation at break of 50 percent, about twice as high as those of previously available materials. The material is well-suited for automotive components, such as interior parts, and aerospace applications.

Produced for direct metal laser sintering, EOS StainlessSteel PH1 offers improved hardness, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties, which complement the company’s 17-4 EOS StainlessSteel GP1 and match the traits of stainless steels currently in use in the medical and aerospace industries.

EOS will demonstrate FORMIGA P 100 plastics laser sintering equipment and EOSINT M 270 for direct metal laser sintering during Rapid 2008 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and Convention Center in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Dr. Michael Shellabear, company vice president, addressed quality requirements for industrial applications of direct metal laser sintering at the Rapid Manufacturing session on May 21.
