Geomagic announced the release of its new 3D scan and CAD design software, Geomagic Spark. The new 3D software combines a live 3D scanning interface, built on Geomagic's 3D point and mesh editing platform, with a comprehensive direct modeling package, built on the SpaceClaim platform. In addition, Geomagic Spark includes assembly modeling and 2D drawing capabilities.

The solution relies on a gesture-based user interface, a simple push/pull toolset, and a familiar ribbon-based GUI. Users can create accurate, manufacturable solid models and assemblies using scan and CAD data in the same application within minutes, even from partial scan data, the company says.

Geomagic Spark is built on the SpaceClaim API, allowing Geomagic's advanced scanning technology to be integrated with the direct modeling capabilities of SpaceClaim. To model, users move between scanning and editing tools, and the platform also enables the integration of third-party add-ins built for the SpaceClaim software, including CAD translators, CAE, CAM, rendering and more.

Geomagic also released its newest version of Geomagic Freeform 3D modeling software. Geomagic Freeform is a touch-enabled solution that facilitates fast 3D modeling of highly detailed, organic shapes; these shapes can then be combined with geometric shapes for prototyping or manufacturing. In combination with Geomagic's Sensable Phantom haptic 3D input devices, Geomagic Freeform software creates a modeling environment in which users can intuitively navigate and design with virtual clay as if sculpting by hand, the company says.

With this release, Freeform combines up to four different modeling approaches: voxels, subdivision surfaces, polygons and NURBS (Geomagic Freeform Plus only). With the new SubD surfacing, designers achieve more control over smooth forms, hard edges, transitional blend control, and the ability to refine the mesh to allow detailed features such as textures to be captured.

Another new feature is the ability to add detailed annotations to models, so that designers, clients and manufacturing partners using Geomagic Freeform can each add pointers, comments, image links and Web page links to models, thus streamlining collaboration throughout the design and production workflow. The solution also enhances standard tools such as 2D Lattice Deform and measurement functions.
