Holy Gadgets! 3D Printing Helps Break Guinness Cosplay Record

3D printing technology helped special effects artist Julian Checkley set a world record and gain a spot in the recently published Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2017, which was released in September. Checkley built an elaborate Batman suit that includes 23 functioning gadgets, earning it the record for “Most functional gadgets on a cos-play suit.”

The suit is based on a design from the Batman: Arkham Origins videogame. Checkley printed the components for the suit with a 3D printer, and then cast the pieces in a flexible urethane rubber. The pieces were detailed and painted, mounted on an undersuit, and then applied to Checkley’s bodycast and weathered.

The suit includes standard Batman gear like a folding Batarang, smoke bombs, a bat tracking beacon (which magnetically attaches to a car), and a grappling gun. There’s also a video screen built into one of the gauntlets, a gas dispenser and fireball shooter in the wrist cuffs, a camera, a two-way radio, a respirator in the cowl, ball bearing grenades, and a “bat flask” (which doesn’t have much crime fighting utility, but I guess every superhero needs to unwind).

In the suit, Checkley (who is 6’6” out of costume) stands nearly 6’10” including his bat ears.

“There were many long hours trying devising the gadgets and finding ways to store them on the suit. They are classic gadgets, but also some are specific to Batman: Arkham Origins. I am immensely proud of my Guinness World Records title and to be part of the Gamer’s Edition is just the next level,” Checkley said.

Checkley, who lives in Galway, Ireland, currently runs Order 66 Creatures and Effects. His film credits include effects work on Breeders, Warlock III, and The Mummy Returns.
