Intel Announces the World's Smallest Standalone 3G Modem

Intel has created the XMM 6255, the world's smallest standalone 3G modem. The company has commercially launched the modem to provide a wireless solution for devices within the Internet of Things network. It measures about 300mm squared in size and is ideal for networked sensors, wearables, security devices and industrial equipment.

The XMM 6255 features the SMARTI UE2p transceiver, the industry's first design to combine transmit and receive functionality with an integrated power amplifier, the company states. This creates a smaller modem that helps minimize material build costs, protects from overheating, voltage peaks and damage under tough usage conditions.

Other key features include a dual-band HSPA, co-designed isoplexer, direct connection to battery power, digitally controlled crystal-oscillator (DCXO) support and an Intel X-GOLD 625 baseband.

The modem also has a unique radio architecture that enables performance in applications such as:

  • Low signal network coverage
  • Small-sized devices with a small form factor such as a smartwatch, or a sensor that may not have enough space for a normal-sized 3G antenna.
