Johnson Precision, Inc. (JPI; Amherst, NH) recently added 3D prototyping capabilities to its arsenal of high-end custom molding and custom machining services, with its acquisition of a Dimension 3D Printing Group's Elite 3D printer. A SolidWorks Network Partner, JPI expands its value-added services to tight-tolerance medical device markets by producing functional models with feature detail and improved surface finish using ABS material, ABSplus, in an 8 x 8 x 12-inch build envelope.

While JPI has provided traditional rapid prototyping using its low-cost, single cavity book molds, the acquisition of the Dimension Elite 3D printer creates new possibilities, especially in 3D prototyping’s ability to brings design concepts to life — unlike paper or computer generated 3D modeling. Furthermore, the company says that now it can spot design flaws earlier in the design and development cycles.

Claude Bessette, JPI general manager, notes that 3D prototyping has multiple applications: ABS can be drilled, tapped, sanded, painted, and chrome plated, making numerous secondary operations available, solidifying the company’s ability to provide meaningful, real time collaboration. Plus, its durability allows rigorous testing and won't warp, shrink or absorb moisture.
