MathWorks has introduced Release 2016b of both MATLAB and Simulink product families. Updates to this version include Big Data tools, a Risk Management Toolbox as well as general updates and bug fixes.

In MATLAB, users now have tall arrays for manipulating data; timetable data container for indexing and synchronizing time-stamped tabular data; ability to define local functions in scripts; and capabilities for running MATLAB code from Java programs.

MATLAB Mobile also lets users log data from iPhone and Android sensors on the MathWorks Cloud. The newly added ThingSpeak enables data collection from internet-connected sensors and analytics generation.

For this Simulink release, MathWorks has improved performance with the JIT compiler; capabilities to initialize, reset and terminate subsystems to model dynamic startup and shutdown behavior; as well as Raspberry Pi 3 and Google Nexus support.

“Companies are awash in data, but struggle to take advantage of it to build better predictive models and gain deeper insights,” says David Rich, MATLAB marketing director, MathWorks. “With R2016b, we’ve lowered the bar to allow domain experts to work with more data, more easily. This leads to improved system design, performance, and reliability.”
