NEi Nastran V9.1 x64 from Noran Engineering, Inc. (NEi; Westminster, CA), a 64-bit application capable of accessing memory above 4GB, engineers gain a couple of improvements: huge models (such as a 15 million degree of freedom linear static analysis) can be analyzed, which would normally be impossible on a 32-bit platform, and large models that would normally use virtual memory in NEi Nastran 32-bit can now directly access large amounts of physical memory (if the system is configured with sufficient RAM).

Noran Engineering also offers two courses. From August 18 to 19, a practical-approach course is offered called Basic Femap Training — suitable for newcomers to finite element analysis (FEA). It contains an introduction to basic part and assembly modeling; linear static and normal modes analysis; 1D, 2D, and 3D element modeling; importing geometry and geometry repair; and meshing, mesh repair, and hand meshing.

From August 20 to 22, a class on NEi Nastran Dynamics will provide the student with the skills to carry out real-world dynamic analyses, such as gust/wind loading, sinusoidal/random vibration, shock loading, etc. in a time domain or frequency domain. It will also cover differences between static and dynamic analysis, NEiNastran dynamic analysis setup, modal and direct formulations for dynamics, and more.

Noran Engineering also announced new structural and ply failure analysis software for composite design engineers: PPFA allows designers to examine the propagation of damage through a structure after firstply failure so an assessment of conditions for ultimate failure can be made. This type of simulation provides the insight needed to optimize designs and set up the most appropriate physical testing programs. PPFA is now included with the purchase of NEi Nastran.
