CD-adapco has announced a limited beta release of its STAR-CCM+ Battery Simulation Module code at the STAR Global Transportation Forum in Detroit, held Nov. 9, 2010.

The Battery Simulation Module is an extension of CD-adapco's flagship CAE tool, STAR-CCM+, and allows the simulation of flow, thermal and electrochemistry phenomena within one simulation environment. This technology is jointly developed by CD-adapco with its partner in this field, Battery Design LLC. The limited beta release is a prelude to the formal delivery of this code within the next milestone version of STAR-CCM+, due in February 2011.

"We have had unprecedented interest in this technology and considering the significance of the development we want to include some of our partners in an additional user feedback phase,” says Steve Hartridge, director of Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technologies at CD-adapco. “We have already identified some users but we do have some additional places available."

CD-adapco also announced that it will be a worldwide distributor of Battery Design LLC's code Battery Design Studio. This follows a successful pilot project in Japan. By providing the Battery Simulation Module and Battery Design Studio through one channel, users have a complete simulation process from the definition of prototype battery cells or new active coatings through to the visualization of that battery's electrochemical and thermal performance operating as part of a large traction battery pack, according to the company.
